Mother Nature is proving once again that she has an impeccable sense of comedic timing. Organizers of the 2026 Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards have officially unveiled this year's shortlisted finalists, selected from a record-breaking pool of more than 10,000 entries submitted by photographers across 112 countries. The annual competition, which aims to promote global wildlife conservation through lighthearted humor, captures animals in their most candid, absurd, and undeniably relatable moments.
Among the standout highlights of the newly released shortlist is a green praying mantis striking a surprisingly glamorous fashion-model pose atop a leaf in Peru, captured by photographer Diego Perez. Other fan favorites include a hyper-focused goldcrest bird in Germany looking like a real-life disgruntled character from Angry Birds, a strutting white-tailed eagle in Finland marching like a runway model, and a bold squirrel launching itself through the air toward a completely bewildered great horned owl in California.
From a caiman sporting a leafy hairpiece reminiscent of Elvis Presley to a pair of gossiping meerkats performing a last-minute grooming inspection before a family portrait, the collection celebrates the lighter side of the animal kingdom. Beyond providing internet users with pure joy, the awards continue to support vital environmental causes, partnering with the Whitley Fund for Nature to raise awareness and funding for worldwide habitat protection.
